Drum Point, located on Solomons Island at the mouth of the Patuxent River, is an example of what is known as a screw-pile lighthouse. It is built on steel pilings with threads on them. The pilings were literally screwed into the bottom, and the structure was constructed on top of them. First operated in 1883, Drum Point has a Fourth Order Fresnel lens. It is now one of the main attractions at Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons.
