U.S. Coast Guard Station

Grand Marais, Michigan, USA

Lake Superior

This small light structure, situated on a rocky causeway, operates as a rear range light. It was built in 1895 and is 34 feet tall. The front range light (not shown) is located at the end of a pier extending out into Lake Superior.

This light is nearly identical in design to several other pierhead lights on Lake Superior. (See Grand Marais, MN; Two Harbors, MN; Ontonagon, MI; Marquette, MI.)

The Grand Marais Harbor once featured a life saving station that now serves as a reception center for the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The building also contains a small maritime museum that features the Third Order Fresnel lens from Au Sable Point Light. This lens will be returned to its original home upon completion of restoration of Au Sable Point Light.

The last land contact with the sunken ore freighter EDMUND FITZGERALD was said to have been made from the radio room of this station.
