Ludington North Pierhead Light

Ludington, Michigan, USA

Lake Michigan

There has been a lighthouse at the end of the Ludington North Pier since 1871. The current white steel light, built in 1924, features a large snowplow-like shield to deflect ice floes in the winter time. Ludington serves as the eastern terminus of the only remaining Lake Michigan car ferry (Manitowoc, WI is the western terminus). These photos were taken from the deck of the car ferry BADGER.

The Ludington North Pierhead Light once contained a Fourth Order Fresnel lens made by Macbeth Evans Glass Co. of Pittsburgh, PA. It was removed in 1995 and is now displayed at the Historic White Pine Village Maritime Museum, located at 1687 South Lakeshore Drive in Ludington, MI.

A modern 300-mm plastic prismatic backup light is now installed in place of the original lens. A type FA232 fog horn with a range of ½ to 1 mile is also present.
