Fort Gratiot Light

Port Huron, Michigan, USA

Lake Huron

Built in 1825, Fort Gratiot was the first lighthouse built on Lake Huron. It was located here to guide ships into the St. Clair River at Port Huron. By 1875, over 33,000 ships passed by this light every year. It was rated at 25,000 candlepower.

Destroyed by storms in 1828, it was rebuilt in 1829, rebuilt again in 1861, and expanded with the addition of a two-story quarters structure in 1875. The facility was fully automated in 1933.
