Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse Straits of Mackinac, Michigan, USA Lake Huron |

|
Bois Blanc Island is located in northern Lake Huron near the Straits of Mackinac. The reefs surrounding this island were recognized as major navigational hazards by the early 19th century. As a result, a narrow point extending out from the north shore of this beautiful island was chosen as the best location for a lighthouse. The latest lighthouse, shown here, was built in 1942 and replaced earlier lights built in 1829 (and rebuilt in 1838 after the original tower collapsed) and 1868. The Bois Blanc (Boblo) Island Light was decommissioned in 1957, rendered obsolete by the lights on the new Mackinac Bridge. The original Bois Blanc Island light was one of the oldest in the area, and just the second lighthouse built in all of Lake Huron. |
