Minneapolis Shoal Light

Minneapolis Shoal, Michigan

Lake Michigan

Featuring modern design, Minneapolis Shoal Light was built in 1932. It is made of steel and sits on a concrete base. If you look closely at the lower left side of this light, you will see a large black mark. This is soot remaining from a fire set by vandals. As this lighthouse is 18 miles from the nearest land, someone had to be fairly determined to vandalize it. Unfortunately, vandalism is one of the most serious threats facing the beautiful old lighthouses on the Great Lakes. This light is identical to Gray's Reef Light.
