Poe Reef Light

Poe Reef, Michigan, USA

Lake Huron

Poe Reef Light replaced a succession of four previous lightships that had been stationed at this dangerous reef since 1893. It is one of many lights that assist ships transiting the Straits of Mackinac South Channel between Lakes Michigan and Huron. Named after Major Orlando M. Poe, it was built in 1929. Its black and white bands make it seem larger than it really is. This light is identical in design to Martin Reef Light.

U.S. Army Major Poe designed the Spectacle Reef Light, one of the most awesome engineering feats ever performed on the Great Lakes. He gained earlier fame as Chief Engineer to Union General William T. Sherman on his famous Civil War-era march to the sea. The Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie is also named for him.
