Holland Harbor Light was built in 1872, reconstructed in 1907, and automated in 1932. In 1936, the tower was removed from a previous light and installed on the roof of this building. The outside was sheathed in steel plates that were painted red. The light was finally abandoned by the Coast Guard in 1970. After that, Holland Harbor Lighthouse Historical Commission formed to restore and preserve the light. Also known as "Big Red," it is located where the outlet of Lake Macatawa meets Lake Michigan in the community of Holland, Michigan. The best views of Big Red are from Ottawa Beach in Holland State Park, located on the north shoreline of Lake Macatawa. From a vantage point across a short span of water, you can photograph the lighthouse on the south pier. |
