Blake Point Light

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, USA

Lake Superior

Blake Point Light marks the northeast end of Isle Royale. it went into operation on October 27, 1917, and replaced a gas-operated light and bell buoy which marked the eastern edge of an 18-foot shoal just off the eastern end of Isle Royale.

This light is a simple 20-foot high skeletal steel tower containing a battery-operated 100-candlepower light. The focal plane of the light is 40 feet above the lake surface. It also is equipped with orange diamond-shaped day markers.

Ships "threading the needle" between Isle Royale and nearby Passage Island benefit from this simple automated light. Note the "Sleeping Giant" on Ontario's Sibley Peninsula in the background.
