The wooden Grosse Ile North Channel Front Range Light sits on concrete base accessible from a short wooden pier on the northeast corner of Grosse Ile, which is 10 miles long and two miles wide. It was built in 1906 and is 40 feet high. Once equipped with a Fresnel lens and oil lamp, it was electified in 1929. To stave off deterioration and possible collapse, the concrete foundation of the light was rebuilt in 1966. New pilings were driven into the riverbed, and over 100 yards of concrete was poured over them, enlarging the base to 17 feet square. Now inactive, this light has been adopted by the Grosse Ile Historical Society. To arrange a tour, write to GIHS at East River Road Parkway, P.O. Box 131, Grosse Ile, MI 48138. |
