Charlevoix South Pierhead Light

Charlevoix, Michigan, USA

Lake Michigan

The Charlevoix piers have been marked with lights since 1885. The first was a wooden light located on the north pier. In 1914, it was replaced by a new light on the south pier. That light was replaced in 1948 by the present light, shown here.

The skeletal design lets large waves pass beneath the steel-clad lantern room. The ten-sided lantern room contains a red plastic optic, which replaced an earlier Fifth Order Fresnel lens. Fog detection sensors and a fog signal are mounted on the lake side of the light (see fourth photo).
