Duluth North Breakwater Light

Duluth, Minnesota, USA

Lake Superior

Duluth North Breakwater Light marks the north end of the breakwater at the entrance to Duluth Harbor from Lake Superior. The 37-fool tall black and white tower still has a Fifth Order Fresnel lens installed. The focal plane is 43 feet above lake level.

This light was authorized after the 1908 Lighthouse Board Annual Report described the approach to Duluth Harbor as "one of the worst and most dangerous on the whole chain of (Great) lakes." At the time, only the south breakwater was lit. Construction on the north tower began in 1909 and was completed in 1910 at a cost of $4,000. The light began operating in April, 1910. It still helps ships navigate into the 300-foot wide channel leading to Duluth harbor.
