Duluth South Breakwater Outer Light marks the outer end of the southern breakwater at the entrance to Duluth Harbor from Lake Superior. It was built in 1901, to replace the existing inner light that had operated since 1872. This structure is made of brick, painted white, with a red metal roof. It is 35 feet high, placing the focal plane of the light 44 feet above lake level. The lantern room is 8' 4" in diameter and has green glass with a cross-hatched pattern. The enclosed Fourth Order Fresnel lens, built by Barbier and Fenestre of Paris, has shone since September 1, 1901. The lens was probably transferred from the predecessor light house. |
